your child's access to technology

Pledge to Procrastinate

Did you know?...

Early access to phones or

too much exposure to technology in general can lead to:

  • low self-esteem

  • poor social functioning

  • over-sensitivity to rejection

  • difficulty waiting

  • increased risks of self-injurious behavior (eating disorders, cutting)

  • sleep disturbances

Our childrens' health and well-being are so important. At the Murray Center, we believe that all childrens' mental health is important; for the excellence of the child and for the excellence of the community in which they live. As we raise this next generation of greatness, we need to protect them from the dangers of online content and online overload. Access to mobile devices and unfettered access to the internet too early or too often can lead to poor outcomes and unintended"sticky" consequences- those consequences that tend to stick around and are difficult to undo.

  • Slowing of the brain and slowing of cognitive and emotional functions

  • Underdevelopment of amygdala and prefrontal cortex, which impacts ability to control judgement, reason, and social rewards

  • Premature thinning of cortex, which processes information

  • Impact on the parts of the brain that maintain emotional regulation, leading to moodiness, flaring temper, and depression.

Impact on Brain Functioning:

Take the Pledge With your child today.

Pledge to wait to get
your child a phone until age 13 or eighth grade.

Some ideas for phone alternatives!

  • Home flip-phone for emergencies

  • Smart watch

  • Tablets with restricted internet access. Our recommendation is very carefully selected YouTube videos. Even with child restrictions, parents should be involved in the approval process for each content creator.

  • Kids messenger app through Facebook

  • Traditional text messaging with close monitoring, such as using an app like Bark.

  • Remember: No social media until 13 years old or eighth grade (Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, BeReal).
